One of the rickety bridges over the canal. Some days the canal water looks clear. Other days...Below are shots of canal water on a clearer day and industrial waste being poured into the canal. Dennis found a small lake that looks like a sewage settling pond. | This car bridge over the canal fascinates me because it is supported by a large tree trunk. In places in the city, like below, the canal is covered and landscaped in center of the street. |
One of Brazil's biggest challenges is their water purification system. It includes drainage canals which are supplied by runoff from rain, residences, businesses and factories. In short, their sewer system is openly handled by canals, like this one below our house, and small reservoirs. This Canal Road is really quiet and nice to walk on, away from the city hustle and bustle. We try not to look closely at the water in the canal, as we take this route frequently on our way to and from the Condor supermarket and home visits. Our ignorance has been noticed; last night we were warned that it is a very dangerous place because of the drugs and violence that occur there. Neighbors claim they never walk on that street and advise us to stay away also. Darn! Now what?
